Christopher Hitchens…

While I don’t post a lot, I would be remiss not to note the passing of one of the icons of Atheists.  Hitch was a powerful orator and watching his debates was one of reasons I went from agnostic to atheist.  Hopefully, one of the new skeptics will take his place on the world stage because there is a gap now…

Science adjusts its views based on what’s observed.
Faith is the denial of observation so that belief can be preserved.

This is a great examination of the questionable language of the Bible.  Most believers have never read the Bible or just pick the verses they want to represent…  And they think atheists are immoral…

Closed minded even to their own…

I was talking to one of my co-workers who is a very faithful Christian and he told of some tension recently.  I have a lot of respect for this co-worker even though he believes and I do not.  Mainly, I appreciate that he is an intellectual.  He reads a lot of essays and does a lot of research for his sermons.  I appreciate the time taken to learn the subject throughly.  The same as I would appreciate a historian studying mythology throughly to get it right…

He told me that recently he used three different translations of a Bible verse in a recent sermon and came under fire for “going outside the truth”.  Apparently, most of the congregation was dedicated to the King James version and were appalled that someone would have the audacity to look at other translations.  It was not like he claimed “there is no God”.  He simply searched for a different interpretation of the text.  I applaud that research, but to the “faithful,” this was tantamount to sacrilege.

If this is how the faithful treat their own, count me in the unfaithful…
